Police Officer Charged with Murder

GUYANA – Two weeks after he allegedly shot 21-year-old Ronaldo Peters, Police Sergeant Philbert Kendall was on Friday charged and remanded to prison for murder.

He was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge during his brief court appearance.

Kendall, who was stationed at the Wismar Police Station in Linden, was captured on CCTV camera on April 7, in plain clothes, exiting an unmarked minibus and chasing behind Peters who was at a corner shop.

Within seconds, a gunshot was heard and the officer was seen dragging the man out of a yard and putting his body into the minibus.

According to reports, the injured youth was driven around in the back of the bus before it eventually went to the Wismar Police Station. At the station, the body was transferred to a police vehicle and taken to the Mackenzie Hospital, where Peters was pronounced dead.

Police claimed that he was wanted for questioning in relation to a sexual assault allegation.

Peters’ shooting death led to protests in the Wismar community. During that demonstration, 32-year-old Keon Fogenay was shot dead when police opened fire to disperse the protesting crowd.

The investigations into his death are still ongoing.

The probe is being led by a team from the Regional Security System and the Guyana Police Office of Professional Responsibility. (News Source Guyna/SLT)
