Alex Pinel, Lady J Crowned Calypso and Soca Champions in National Secondary Schools Competition

Two queens were crowned in the National Secondary Schools Calypso and Soca Competition, held on Friday at the Mindoo Phillip Park as part of the Lucian Junior Carnival festivities.

Alex Pinel of Castries Comprehensive Secondary School and Lady J of St Joseph’s Convent overcame the competition to take top spots in the calypso and soca segments, respectively.

Pinel’s powerful and thought-provoking performance of School Girl earned her the crown

Second place went to Ti Kenno of Vieux Fort Comprehensive Secondary School, whose delivery of Stand for Something left a strong impression on the audience and, clearly, the judges.

Queen M-Sul from Corinth Secondary School earned third place with her engaging performance of This Generation, while Monee of Babonneau Secondary School placed fourth with the environmentally themed Combating Climate Change.

Other notable performers in the calypso segment included TJ of Ciceron Secondary School with I Love de Math, Mama D of Entrepot Secondary School who delivered Cyber World Reality, Nyus of Micoud Secondary School with National Word, and Baby T of Patricia D. James Secondary School who sang Bring Back. Najma of Stanley Jon Odlum School of Arts, Media and Design presented Stronger Together, and Mighty Swiff of St Lucia Sports Academy rounded out the field with Loyalty.

In the soca competition, Lady J of St Joseph’s Convent emerged winner after delivering a crowd-pleasing performance of Free Up Friday

Kaley of Corinth Secondary School came in second with her energetic track Soca Earthquake, and Chloe of Patricia D James Secondary School placed third with an inspiring performance of I Can Make It

The fourth-place spot went to Mama G of Bocage Secondary, who lit up the stage with For De Carnival.

Also gracing the soca stage were Kyleigh of Castries Comprehensive Secondary School with It’s Carnival, JJ and Kennai of Ciceron Secondary School who performed Ciceron The Best, and Lil Richie of Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School with No Rampage.

Following the announcement of their victories, Alex Pinel and Lady J returned to the stage and performed their winning songs while their peers, families, and supporters cheered them on.
