Street Character ‘Kunta’ Dies Suddenly at Roadside

Well-known street character Kunta, the self-proclaimed “president of the vagrant association”, died suddenly on Tuesday morning in Gros Islet, shocking residents and bystanders.

Kunta, real name Stephen William, who gained local notoriety through a number of viral videos, was reportedly seen walking along Chapel Street around 5:45 a.m. before collapsing near a fence. Philomen Bretney, also known as Sister, said she witnessed the incident while preparing for her morning bread sales.

“In the morning [I was] getting ready to sell the bread, it was about say quarter to six. We saw the man, me and my neighbour, we saw him walking, coming up the road towards us. But he was [moving] as if he was sick; not drunk, but like he was tossing here and there,” she said.

She recalled seeing him stumble before falling. “Then, when we went to look, we saw the man was not moving… we thought maybe he just fell… but he’s still not getting up. So we [checked] to see what was happening.”

Bretney said a van carrying several men happened to be driving by. “We told them, look, somebody fell and he’s not moving… and thank God it was an ex-police. So he came and he watched and he said, ‘That looks serious,’ so [he] will take it from there. Then he called the ambulance.”

According to Bretney, Kunta appeared ill rather than intoxicated. She also heard from others that his demeanour had been unusually quiet the day before in a notable change from his typically boisterous personality, when he reportedly attended a football match,

The Saint Lucia Fire Service confirmed that emergency responders were dispatched to Chapel Street at 6:09 a.m. “On arrival at the scene, an adult male was found in a prone position, unresponsive with negative vitals. On assessment, it was observed that his throat was penetrated by a tree stump. He was pronounced dead on scene by a medical doctor,” the Fire Service said in a statement.

No further details were released.
