SLMDA Hosts Urgent Blood Drive on Saturday

In a bid to combat the island’s chronic blood shortage, the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA) will be hosting a national blood drive on Saturday, June 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their parking lot in Tapion, directly opposite the Tapion School.

The initiative is part of the association’s continued efforts to serve the community and encourage a culture of voluntary blood donation.

Vice President of the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association Dr Dianne Ferdinand-Walcott

SLMDA Vice President Dr Dianne Ferdinand-Walcott spoke of the urgency and personal impact of blood shortages. “I think most St Lucians have seen the flyers being circulated requesting blood,” she told St Lucia Times. “The need is ever present, but the supplies in the blood bank have remained low.”

She explained that donated blood can mean the difference between life and death for many.

From premature babies and mothers who experience severe bleeding during childbirth, to children battling sickle cell crises or individuals with serious blood conditions, the need is constant.

She also highlighted patients facing cancer or those requiring critical surgeries, as well as accident victims who arrive at the hospital in desperate need. “They all deserve a fighting chance to live,” she said.

Encouraging nationwide support, Ferdinand-Walcott said, “You can give them that hope. Join the doctors of the SLMDA as we lead by example, giving even more of ourselves, our blood for our citizens.”

The event will not only be about donating but will also celebrate the spirit of giving. “There will be snacks, music and the opportunity to snag some wonderful prizes,” Walcott added.
