The Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) trophy returned to Saint Lucia over the weekend, the first time since the Saint Lucia Kings celebrated their maiden CPL title last September. This time, the tour was all about building anticipation for the 2025 season, which kicks off in just over a month.
Fans flocked to Derek Walcott Square in Castries and Independence Square in Vieux Fort for a chance to snap photos with both the CPL and Women’s CPL trophies. They also got to meet Kings players Shadrack Descarte and Keon Gaston, score prizes from sponsors and secure advance tickets.
“We have the Republic Bank CPL Trophy as well as the Massy WCPL Trophy here, just for persons to get excited, take photos, and also we have early-bird special ticket sales right here on the ground,” said CPL Marketing Officer Christine Charles. “So we really want to encourage the fans to come out and really support the Kings. Let them feel that spirit, because they are the defending champions.
“We definitely want to bring that Republic Bank CPL energy here early, ahead of the games. So the games [in Saint Lucia] are from August 23 to 31. And we just want to bring that vibe and bring that energy here in Saint Lucia, and get people excited for ‘The Biggest Party in Sports’.”
Before their home stand, the Kings will begin their title defence when the 13th edition of the tournament starts on August 14 in St Kitts & Nevis. The 2024 champions will be without long-serving captain Faf du Plessis, who has retired, while head coach Daren Sammy balances his dual role as West Indies’ all-format coach.
Four Saint Lucians will feature on the Kings’ roster: Mon Repos natives Descarte and Gaston, all-time CPL leading scorer Johnson Charles, and emerging talent Ackeem Auguste. The Women’s CPL (WCPL) is also expected to include West Indies stars Qiana Joseph and Zaida James.
