A team of three will represent Saint Lucia in six events at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore later this month. Olympic swimmer Mikaili Charlemagne, Antoine Destang and Naekeisha Louis will be accompanied by head coach Andy Edwards.
Louis, 20, will be first into the water, contesting the women’s 100m butterfly on July 26, and the 50 fly on July 31. Louis is a freshman at the University of North Carolina, Pembroke.
Fresh off participation in last month’s French Elite Championships, Destang will compete in the men’s 100m freestyle on July 29 and the 100 fly two days later. Just 17, Destang is weeks away from beginning his collegiate career at the University of Michigan.
Charlemagne, 22, will take on the women’s 100m freestyle on July 31 and the 50 free on August 1. She has not competed at a high level for over a year, but still retains sufficient World Athletics points to merit her selection.
According to the Saint Lucia Aquatics Federation, selection was based on WA points and swimmer availability. The team is scheduled to arrive in Singapore on July 24.
Over 2 500 athletes will compete in 77 events and six disciplines at the championships.
