Rankin’ Morgan is a young Saint Lucian entrepreneur and the managing director and web developer at 123 Digital Limited. He is also the founder/managing editor of Dazzle Magazine as well as a producer with Dazzle Music. St Lucia Times’ Tony Nicholas caught up with Rankin’ Morgan this week, after the Groovy Soca Monarch victory of Imran Nerdy had settled in. Nerdy’s winning song Warning was produced by Morgan for Dazzle Music.
Q. How did you become involved in music?
My involvement in music started in the early 90s. I was a student of the Saint Lucia School of Music, where I played piano for three to four years. Then from 1999 into the early 2000s, my brother and I, Irvine Springer, formed a DJ crew called Mezzo Forte Champion Sound, where we played at local clubs such as Indies, Gaiety and at various events.
In 2007, as a new producer I was fortunate to record the song Release the Tiger for the late Nicole David. I also produced a song with Alpha called What You Waiting For. I was fortunate back then to have guidance from the late Francis Leebo Delima and Adam Gilmore.
Q. What would you say was your first noteworthy song?
My first noteworthy song would definitely be Release the Tiger. I think it was because of the singer, dubbed then the queen of the jungle, her dominance, her ability to execute the song and also her vocal range and versatility.
Q. How did you hook up with Imran Nerdy and what was it that made you feel comfortable working with him?
I have known Imran Nerdy for some time, probably a decade or so. I admired his drive and his work ethic, as well as his delivery and his articulation when it comes to sound writing and performing. I always believed that he would be someone to take Saint Lucia’s music to the next level.
Q. What was the first song you worked on together?
Work It, which was nine years ago, believe it or not.
Q. Tell us about your involvement with Nerdy post-COVID?
I’ve worked with Imran as a producer for the past three years, especially in the Groovy Soca category. I did Unemployed in 2023, Unfold It and Catapult in 2024 which was a Power Soca and, of course, this year we returned to Groovy with Warning. I am also part of his management team that focuses on marketing and branding. So, the look and feel of Imran’s brand I do pay a lot of attention to, I give good guidance and direction to ensure that he remains top of mind and that his lyrics are able to resonate with the people.
Q. What does the Groovy Monarch victory mean to you?
Winning the Groovy Monarch is definitely a big achievement, and I am proud to say that we have accomplished that milestone. That was also the missing part of the puzzle because he won the Power Soca and Road March titles in 2023, the Most Exportable Song in 2024, and now 2025, the Groovy Soca monarch title.
Q. Did you work with any other artists this year?
I worked with many artists including Ninja Dan’s Too Sweet, Bystander with Alpha and two songs with Sia, Take My Time and All in Me.
Q. What are your views on the state of the Saint Lucia Carnival and the music?
Saint Lucia’s Carnival is definitely growing. We have a unique product which people love. We see an increase in visitors every year and many of the events sell out very quickly.
Our artists are producing some really good music. So we just need to encourage everyone and to push everyone to be great. I can’t wait to be on the road Monday and Tuesday to be a part of the full Lucian Carnival experience.
