The local football community is reeling after Sherman Augustin, a national team player and former midfielder for Antiguan club Grenades FC, was fatally stabbed on Carnival Monday in Vigie. Augustin, who also played for the Gros Islet District League in the Saint Lucia Semi-Professional Football League, was just 22 years old.
The incident has plunged fans and fellow athletes into mourning, with many expressing disbelief across social media platforms.
The Saint Lucia Football Association led the tributes to Augustin. In a statement, the association quoted national assistant coach Francis Baba Lastic as saying he was a “rising star and a hard and dedicated worker whose modus operandi was putting the team first”.
“Sherman brought passion and inspiration to the game in St. Lucia and showed immense potential,” the statement said. “Every time he wore the national colours, he did so with pride and dignity and will surely be missed.”
Augustin was making a mark in regional football. During the 2024 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Shield in Curaçao, he played an important role in Grenades FC’s historic run to the final, the first Antiguan club to achieve the feat.
Augustin scored the only goal in their 1–0 semifinal win over Dominica’s CCCUL Dublanc FC, coming in the 84th minute. He also scored once earlier in the preliminary round, ending with two goals in the tournament. Tragically, his promising career was cut short in circumstances that remain unclear.
In a heartfelt statement on Facebook, Grenades President Chester Hughes mourned Augustin’s passing, praising his impact both on and off the field.
“Since joining us from Saint Lucia, Sherman has been a game-changer, helping lead us to our historic 2022/23 league title, stepping up in the CFU Club Shield, and showing true heart every time he puts on the Grenades Jersey,” it read.
“A natural leader on and off the field, Sherman represents everything we stand for: discipline, humility, and a hunger to win. He was the life of the party at social events held by the club. A healthy eater and true Lucian when it comes to partying.
“We honour you, Sherman – and we’re proud to have had you in the Grenades family.”
