Headline: Team Saint Lucia Repeat as OECS Boxing Champions
Team Saint Lucia have once again claimed top honours at the 2025 Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Invitational Boxing Championships held over the Emancipation Day weekend. The young fighters proudly flew the flag, taking on some of the region’s best.
This year’s event was hosted at the Pavilion in Rodney Bay, a departure from the traditional use of the Vigie Sports Complex, which had often presented logistical challenges for organisers. A diverse audience turned out to witness the present and future of Caribbean boxing.
Final Results:
- Saint Lucia – 24 points (4 gold, 5 silver, 2 bronze)
- Trinidad & Tobago – 16 points (4 gold, 2 silver)
- Guyana – 15 points (5 gold)
- Martinique – 8 points (2 gold, 1 silver)
- Antigua & Barbuda – 8 points (1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze)
Special Recognition Awards:
- Best Junior Boxer – Nacham Alex (Saint Lucia)
- Best Female Boxer – Akeelah Vancooten (Guyana)
- Best Youth Boxer – Terron Wintz (Guyana)
- Best Elite Boxer – John Didier (Saint Lucia)
In a post-event interview, Boxing Association President David “Shakes” Christopher praised organisers and partners for a successful showcase. A core part of Caribbean boxing’s vision, he noted, is to build progress through the “coalition of the willing” – by bringing together various members of society who want to see the sport thrive.
“We had a really nice attendance. We had about six different ambassadors here, and there was just a championship for us. We had the Venezuelan ambassador, who came here and offered us an opportunity to come to Venezuela and train our boxers. [She] gave us four scholarships for the young boxers… And we’re grateful for that.
“We saw the French embassy come on board… they’re with us every night, and they’re happy with what they are seeing. Those who are willing to work together will benefit from what’s happening because what we benefit we can share with the rest of the community.”
