Dominant Calderon, Charles Retain Table Tennis Titles

DeAndre Calderon and Shatal Charles continue to dominate domestic table tennis, with Calderon securing his fifth consecutive national men’s singles title and Charles claiming the women’s crown for the third time.

Calderon met Manie Eleuthere in an intriguing title fixture, handing the young challenger an emphatic 4-0 defeat, 11-8, 11-3, 11-9, 11-2.

Calderon advanced to the final after topping a group that included Stephen Steele and Kowen Lionel. He overpowered Celestine Samuel in the quarterfinals, then defeated under-15 star Leshon Francis 4-0.

Eleuthere topped Group 2 after beating Dawitt Nurse and Christopher Franklin. He came from behind to get past veteran campaigner Adrian Albert 3-1 in the quarters, then stopped Joshua Lubin 4-2 in the semis.

Also competing were Van Dyke Jude, Jaedon John, Khamari Harris and Michael John.

Charles, meanwhile, extended her unbeaten streak into a second year. Only Zariane Anthony was able to take a game off the teen in the final. After dropping the first game, Shatal quickly regrouped, raised her level, and stormed back to take the next three games in commanding fashion.

Anthony and third-place finisher Cherese Darcheville were among several former national standouts who returned to the National Table Tennis Centre to test the mettle of the one-time Caribbean Under-13 gold medallist. Charles rose to the occasion with poise and power, brushing past all but one of her opponents in straight sets.
