PM hails late ambassador Elma Gene Isaac as ‘national treasure’

Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has paid tribute to the late diplomat Elma Gene Isaac, remembering her as a “titan of our diplomatic corps” and a “national treasure” whose dedication shaped Saint Lucia’s regional partnerships.

Isaac, Saint Lucia’s ambassador to CARICOM, the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), and the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), died on July 30 at the age of 60.

“It’s with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I mark the passing of Ambassador Elma Gene Isaac,” Pierre said during a cabinet press briefing on Monday. “On behalf of the government and people of Saint Lucia, I extend my deepest condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew this remarkable woman.”

He praised her “unwavering dedication” in advancing Saint Lucia’s interests and strengthening its regional and international ties.

“She was very knowledgeable, particularly on CARICOM affairs … a fierce advocate for our country, a regionalist, a mentor to many aspiring diplomats and a beacon of integrity and professionalism,” he said.

Pierre also noted her role as a single mother raising two sons after the death of their father.

A statement from the Ministry of External Affairs on July 31 described Isaac as “a formidable negotiator, a meticulous analyst and a silver-tongued polyglot” who ensured Saint Lucian values “were well articulated and well respected in regional and international fora”.

“It was her mantra, that though small in size, Saint Lucia must create the earthquakes and leave the footprints that are symbolic of the intellectual prowess and technical capabilities of our officials,” the ministry said. “Her contributions to diplomacy and the professional development of junior officers under her charge will never be forgotten.”

Isaac, a former permanent secretary, will be buried on Friday.

  1. dont mean to be mean but not sure in what capacity they are referring to in terms of experience. Like all of them, these are personal and political appointments. Likely they are out of their depth in these positions. by all means give accolades where the person has made a stellar contribution through knowledge, expertise and commitment. Dont go making up things . RIP
