Sparks Dominate Before Rain Halts ECCB Netball Opener

Saint Lucia’s opening game was abandoned prematurely, as the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) International Netball Series got underway in St George’s, Grenada. Rain and logistical issues have plagued the fifth annual edition of the competition, which tipped off Saturday at the Tanteen Netball Facility.

Saint Lucia’s Piton Sparks came up against Montserrat, one of the weakest teams in the field of 10. Third last year, the Saint Lucians were in a dominant mood, racking up a 38-5 lead when proceedings were called off due to heavy showers.

According to reports from the Caribupdate News Service, an already tight schedule of matches will become even more complicated following further rain interventions on Sunday, which will mean that space must be made for rescheduled games.

Saint Lucia were due to face Barbados on Sunday. Dominica will follow on Monday, weather permitting, Antigua & Barbuda on Tuesday, and Anguilla on Wednesday. The Thursday tilt against defending champions St Vincent & the Grenadines on Thursday will be crucial in Saint Lucia’s quest for the Gloria Ballantyne Trophy.

Guyana, returning to regional netball for the first time in years, will be Saint Lucia’s opponents on Friday. The Sparks face the hosts on Saturday, and end against the Cayman Islands on Sunday evening.

Only two games were completed on Saturday. Grenada beat Dominica 65-43, and Antigua & Barbuda defeated Anguilla 63-17. St Vincent & the Grenadines led Guyana 41-10, before the rains came. Barbados versus the Cayman Islands did not start.
