The EmpowerMen Project has taken the lead in addressing indiscriminate littering in La Clery with a new community-driven initiative called Keep LA Clean.
Founder Shavonne Bryan, a resident of the community, said the aim is to give people clear options for proper waste disposal.
“What we want to do is place small bins around the area, which are recycled water barrels, or drums, plastic drums, as you call it, and allow persons to see those drums, and effectively dump their trash in those drums,” he explained.
The campaign will begin with six bins placed along key points of the community, from the Massy La Clery area near the beach roundabout to La Clery playing field, leading to the Patricia D James Secondary School in the first instance, so that persons along the way can have several options to dispose of their garbage neatly.
He added that the goal is not just cleanliness, but also protecting the community’s health and beauty.
“When there’s a lot of trash, it attracts rodents, it attracts all kind of insects, and it makes the place unsightly. La Clery is a beautiful area so what we want to do is keep it nice, keep it clean,” he noted.
“Residents located lower in the community are now requesting bins for their area, so we are looking to do that soon.”
The first phase of the project will serve as the foundation for larger plans to promote environmental responsibility within the community.
