‘Gusto’ sweeps weekly collegiate soccer honours

Saint Lucian footballer Donavan Gusto Phillip scored as many goals last week as he had all of last season, and his seven-day romp earned him a trio of collegiate honours, including his first-ever conference player of the week award.

Hailing from the community of Marchand, Phillip netted six times in just two games, totalling 101 minutes. The powerful centre-forward scored four goals in 25 minutes against William & Mary, then tallied a brace in a road matchup against Boston College, as the Wolfpack remained unbeaten this season at 7-0-1. He leads the nation with a dozen goals this season, four more than any other player in NCAA Division I.

His rich vein of form earned Phillip his maiden Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honour, for matches played from September 15-21, as announced on September 23. But that wasn’t all for the junior striker.

College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer also recognised Phillip, who has already been drafted by the Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer. He is set to begin his professional career in 2026, marking the first time a Saint Lucian will play at that level. The week prior, Phillip scored one each in the defeats of Stetson and Florida Atlantic, and he is rapidly setting himself up as one of the favourites for collegiate player of the year.

Phillip’s form and that of his team will be bad news for the national team, which is set to play two tough friendly fixtures in November. During that time, the Wolfpack and Phillip will almost certainly be in the thick of the NCAA playoffs.
