Nursing students at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC) are expressing deep gratitude and renewed motivation following the introduction of a government subsidy that reduces the cost of their training. The phased financial support, which took effect this academic year, is already being described as a “lifesaver” by some enrolled in the nursing programme.
Under the new system, students receive EC$2,500 in both their first and second years, EC$5,000 in the third year, and a full EC$10,000 in the final year, covering the entire cost of tuition at that stage.
For students juggling full-time jobs and full-time studies, the financial burden had become overwhelming.
“It was very challenging… you have to give your work your full time. You have to give your school your full-time. So getting to study and give school the attention it deserves was nearly impossible,” a third-year student shared.
With tuition costs peaking in the final year, many nursing students have relied on loans just to stay enrolled. For them, the financial assistance could not have come at a better time.
“It came at a great time, especially the last year, which is the most expensive; two semesters and $10,000,” one student said. “That’s a lot of money. It’s really helpful. I don’t have to face my credit union anymore to get that disbursement. That’s less interest on my loan.”
For many, the initiative also represents something more than dollars and cents.
“It shows that our leaders believe in our potential and are investing in our future. We’re very happy about that,” one student said.
Another added: “It relieved my mind…So I was very elated. Finally, some financial support where I can now devote all my time to nursing school.”
