Turks and Caicos Bar Association president meets AG to strengthen regional legal ties

The President of the Turks and Caicos Islands Bar Association Mark A Fulford, paid a courtesy call on the Honourable Leslie Mondesir, attorney general of Saint Lucia, on September 24 2025, at the Attorney General’s Chambers in Castries.

At the outset of the meeting, Fulford conveyed warm greetings from the Attorney General of the Turks and Caicos Islands, Hon. Rhondalee Braithwaite-Knowles, who asked that her profound regards be extended to her Saint Lucian counterpart.

The discussion provided an opportunity for the two legal leaders to exchange views on Saint Lucia’s recent strides in modernising its justice system and to explore avenues for future collaboration.

Mondesir highlighted some of the significant reforms spearheaded under his tenure, including the Revised Laws of Saint Lucia (2023), the introduction of judge-alone trials to help address case backlogs, and the commencement of the $143 million Halls of Justice project, which will consolidate the nation’s courts and judicial services into one state-of-the-art facility.

The two also discussed the growing role of artificial intelligence in court proceedings, noting the pioneering practice directions already issued by the Caribbean Court of Justice and the Turks and Caicos Islands Supreme Court in 2025. Both agreed on the importance of ensuring innovation is balanced with safeguards for accuracy, transparency, and fairness.

“I welcomed the opportunity to engage with President Fulford and to discuss both the progress we have made in Saint Lucia and the challenges that lie ahead.” Mondesir said, as he reaffirms his commitment to strengthening the island’s justice system.

“Strengthening our justice system is a national priority, and partnerships with colleagues across the region allow us to learn from each other’s experiences. Our conversation on the integration of technology, including artificial intelligence, underscored the importance of building a judiciary that is modern, accessible, and resilient.” Mondesir continued.

Looking forward, Mondesir and Fulford committed to strengthening cooperation through knowledge-sharing, legislative reform initiatives, and professional training for legal practitioners across their jurisdictions.
