Nigerian-born artist and medical student Somto Doris is currently displaying her first art exhibition, ‘Body Currency: For Soul to Soul Interaction’ at La Place Carenage in Castries.
In an interview with St. Lucia Times, Doris revealed that she began painting as a child and decided in December 2016 to pursue art professionally.

The showcase, endorsed by the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF), opened on October 29 and will run until November 12, offering free admission to the public.
“By February, March of 2017 I started using oil paint, and also started doing portraits,” she recalled. Her dedication soon paid off just before leaving Nigeria, she entered a competition with one of her portraits, and, “that painting won best painting, which kind of gave me confidence in my art and in what I do.”

After moving to Saint Lucia in September 2017, Doris continued to balance her creative journey alongside her studies in medicine. She admitted that it has not always been easy. “Balancing it with school wasn’t very easy… but it was a dedication. It was something that I was very dedicated to,” she said.
Despite the long hours she spends at the clinic as a student assistant, she continues to find time for her passion. “When I’m back, I’m tired, exhausted, but I still encourage myself to paint, because… my art also requires my time as well.”
Doris’ exhibition, Body Currency, explores human connection and emotion through vibrant portraiture and cultural symbolism. Each piece reflects the artist’s approach to storytelling through colour, texture, and soul.

Beyond her personal achievements, Doris is passionate about fostering community among artists in Saint Lucia.
She founded an informal artist club where creatives meet monthly to share, learn, and collaborate. “I hope to continue that, introducing things like art competitions, art workshops, and seminars… to encourage people to stay consistent and committed to their craft,” she said.
Her work recently reached a new milestone when she had the honour of presenting a portrait to the President of Nigeria during his visit to Saint Lucia earlier this year. She described it as “a very important opportunity and moment for me.”
