Notwithstanding a bruising defeat in the last general election, lawyer Michael St Catherine has again thrown his hat into the ring, announcing on November 11 his intention to contest the Micoud North constituency as an independent candidate in the December 1, 2025, poll.
In his statement, St Catherine said, “My friends, it is time for Micoud North to move away from the past. There is too much disrespect for the workers of the constituency. We must embrace those who mean well, not those who never prepared themselves and are clearly lacking experience, knowledge, and training.”
In an interview with St. Lucia Times, St Catherine attributed his decision to contest the election as “divine inspiration” and encouragement from “many… nationwide who showed support”.
Speaking about his campaign plans, he referenced a 15-point plan presented in the last general election, adding, “The next step, we are putting things in place. We are already in motion and within the next week, you will see our presence all around the constituency. We need a little more action in Micoud. That is the difference I want to make. I want to improve…We need to provide work for the people in the community.”
He said he felt indebted to Micoud and was offering himself again as a candidate, notwithstanding what had happened in the past.
In the 2021 general election, St Catherine received a mere 28 votes or 0.7% with UWP candidate Gale Rigobert receiving 1,731 votes, 42.8%, and the winner Jeremiah Norbert of the SLP 2,283 votes, 56.5%.
“Micoud wants quality representation. I am the one, I think, who is best prepared to provide it,” he said.
He will face off against cousins Jeremiah Norbert, the incumbent SLP representative, and Elisha Norbert, the UWP candidate.
Referencing his opponents, St Catherine said, “Let’s move away from family disputes brewing between relatives fighting for power and concentrate on improving the lives of Micoudians..”
