Guy Joseph confirms police seizure of cash amid vote-buying allegations

United Workers Party (UWP) Deputy Leader and candidate for Castries South East, Guy Joseph, has confirmed reports that police seized a large sum of cash found on his person earlier today, following allegations that he was paying individuals to vote for him.

According to senior police officials who spoke to St. Lucia Times, officers received a report that the former minister was allegedly distributing money to influence voters on Election Day. Acting on the information, officers approached Joseph at a residence near the polling station.

Police say Joseph was found with $12 000 in cash, which was subsequently confiscated pending an investigation.

Speaking on Newspin this afternoon, Joseph acknowledged the incident and strongly denied attempting to bribe voters. He insisted he was not on the public road and was not engaged in any illegal activity when the officers approached him.

“I was in the yard, not on the road, not anywhere in proximity… well, it’s close to the polling station, but I was not on the road,” Joseph said.

“A police vehicle came in with about four police officers. ….then the police came to me and they said to me, ‘We got reports that you are paying people to vote’. So I said, ‘But how could I be paying people to vote? I’ve never paid persons to vote before’. Everybody knows who has been paying for votes from before elections to now.”

Joseph said officers then questioned him about the amount of money in his possession.

“They asked me how much money I had in my pocket. I told them. So he said, ‘You have two choices. Either you give me the money and you get it back after 6 p.m. on the basis of the suspicion of the report that was made, or you can be arrested and taken down.’

Now, I didn’t know it was illegal for people to have money in their pocket…”

He maintained that the situation was politically motivated and denied any wrongdoing.

Police have not indicated whether charges will be laid but confirmed that the matter is under active investigation as part of broader election-day monitoring efforts.

The UWP has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

  1. Herein lies the question: If the money were not for buying votes, why then sir did you have so much on your person, everywhere being closed?

    and

If it were for some other reason, then surely that should’ve been explained to the officers with proof immediately being provided

  2. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haha hahaha ahhhhhhhhh….I busy all day yuh know BUT well well well well my my my my there there there……and his cohorts will say “he is a good man” then there is the classic ” it’s was orchestrated by the SLP” the norm given the history of been caught in the yellow cookie jar over and over again. Mr Pojah letter, Miami Herald where art thou he is at it again.. You think their supporters will rid their party of Bonnie and Clyde ??? They themselves lack shame They will still remain right there. Oh well !

  3. How about he had it on his person in case they won so that he can celebrate with his supporters by buying out the bars and food stalls…..just watching from a lawyer’s lens!

  4. Mr. Guy

Proximity: nearness in space, time, or relationship.
Close: only a short distance away or apart in space or time.

So which is it? You lie to dam LIE. you very deceptive.

  5. @ Just saying – I am neither SLP nor UWP but this man Joseph honestly needs to get his diction together. As a St. Lucian living abroad it is embarrassing to hear him speak. Also why is he in the vicinity of a polling station with $12,000.00 in his pocket???? So he would want to win by buying votes – his intentions and evidence is VERY clear – these idiots who want power think they are above the law and they will do anything to be glorified – really ??????

I also add because culturally some Lucians will also sell their soul for a few bucks and that also is a crying shame….

  6. All of that and they still got a beating on the poll. I hope that their leader heeds the worning and steps down. The man is destroying the fabric of the UWP.
It’s going to be very lonely for him in the House of Assembly. Lord almighty! Even independent won more seats than them. What a shame, which I’m enjoying immensely!
    Congratulations SLP!

  7. There were unanswered questions about uncounted ballots and ballots that were discarded in 80% of the polling stations. It happened in 1997, 2021 and now 2025. If an independent investigation is done the truth will come out.

  8. Obviously Guy Joseph thought he was going to win, so he walked with $12,000 to pay for all the drinks and eats he would have to buy later.

  9. Well I don’t believe Guy’s story because I saw for myself enough Vite buying on Election Day and the weeks leading up to election by both parties. At the end of the day the party with the most money and influence on the electorate won.
