For the second time in four years, the United Workers Party’s (UWP) National Council has rejected a resignation from its political leader, Allen Chastanet.
According to a press release issued on December 8, the council, described by the party as its “highest decision-making body”, met to deliberate on “recent political developments,” including Chastanet’s latest offer to step down. After what the release described as thorough deliberation, the council arrived at a “clear and unanimous decision” to keep Chastanet at the helm until the party’s next convention.
This marks the second time the UWP has declined Chastanet’s withdrawal from leadership. His first resignation attempt came in 2021, following the Saint Lucia Labour Party’s (SLP) electoral victory that year. His most recent offer was submitted last week, amid calls for new leadership following the party’s loss in the December 1 general election, where the UWP secured just one of the 17 contested seats.
The statement, signed by Public Relations Officer Leonard Spider Montoute, emphasised the party’s commitment to stability and renewal.
“The United Workers Party remains committed to serving the public interest, strengthening our organisation and working constructively toward our shared goals,” the release noted, thanking members and supporters for their continued trust.

Talk about not reading the room: ” keep Chastanet at the helm until the party’s next convention.”
Sheesh! Y’all people simple here.
Ok.
I am a UWP supporter, but as long as chastanet is there i will vote for SLP. Mah maylay sah zot dee. I guess SLP will be there forever.
Bravo! We Flambeau supporters totally stand behind you Mr. Allan Chastanet and the Council! Mr. Chastanet is a Leader and a visionary. Very respectful and humble, who only want what’s best for the country. SLP and their cronies are NOT going to dictate to us Flambeau’s who should be leader of our party. How dare they! They are sticking to their party, loyal to a fault. Very little chance that any or many of them will move to our camp, no matter how much we point to the corruption and lies happening in real time in their party, or how much we try to show them we can move the country in a better, more prosperous direction. So, go celebrate you all so-called win, and be more concerned about cleaning your own houses. We Flambeau’s are going to handle things on this side ourselves, thank you very much.
This is the very reason I his party has lost the last 2 elections, because of an group if people who has no vision and continue with washed out ideas that cannot impress the electorate. The people has spoke as long as the leadership remain USP won’t win another election.
Correction: The very reason many has left this party
Are you saying there is no one suitable to run the uwp? How long do the uwp supporters want the party to stay in opposition? Well, bring back Guy, Dominic and all the other loosers again
LOL Just Saying! You are so right.
The people are obviously not interested in having him back in office. If UWP ever wants to regain control, they need to accept his resignation.
He read the room alright. The tactics of labour is not going to work. Enjoy this 4 years. It is finished. Not so much for Pierre. But most of the others. Chastanet start scoping out excellence from now. Build that manifesto and plan for means of implementation as soon as you get back into office
Just saying, UWP diehard supporters will support mate NO MATTER what. However, what they just don’t realize is this: the majority of Lucians DO NOT want Chas to EVER be PM in this beautiful country of ours. PERIOD!!!
If his resignation is accepted that would mean the deputy leader takes over…. Maybe they prefer to him instead of Guy or Fedee. Hence deciding to wait till convention..
Just my thoughts
