District 8 dominate primary school road race

Kids from under the Pitons stole the show Tuesday, outrunning dozens of rivals to dominate the Inter‑District Primary Schools Road Race in Gros Islet.

Nearly 100 boys and girls from every corner of Saint Lucia converged at the Beausejour community for the race. Beginning on Bella Rosa Road and winding their way along a three‑kilometre route to the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground, the competitors dug deep, delivered spirited performances and did themselves proud.

District 8, representing Soufriere and Canaries, grabbed three of the four gold medals on offer. In the Under-13 boys, Kem Deterville won in 11:22.7, with his two teammates taking spots in the top 10. Jason Williams was the lone top-three finisher for D1, ending in 11:33.5 for silver. D3’s Nathan Dupre clocked 11:37.5 for bronze.

Among the Under-13 girls, Earnisha Cherubin of D8 stopped the timer at 13:44.3 for gold. She was followed home by Lean Gaillard of D3 in 14:14.6, and Chrisannie Mitchel of D5, 14:18.1. Again, all three D8 runners made the top 10.

Hadassah Jules impressed in the U11 category, outpacing the U13 girls and many of the U13 boys. The Soufriere starlet ran 12:51.3 for first place. Her teammate, Dreamer Longville, was third in 13:30.4, and the pair was split by Octavia Octave, running 13:10.9 to finish second for D6. The third D8 runner was fourth.

The only division in which the top spot escaped D8 was U11 boys, won by Vanile Eugene in 11:55.2 for D3. The talented young Lidj Jn Pierre of D7 was second in 12:10.7, and Janik Prospere of D8 third in 12:20.6. (TF)
