Saint Lucia women cricketers beaten again in Windwards T20

Saint Lucia are out of contention for the Windward Islands Women’s T20 title after losing their second straight fixture on Monday, February 5. The Saint Lucians fell by nine wickets to Grenada at Arnos Vale Sports Complex in St Vincent & the Grenadines.

Saint Lucia captain Zaida James won the toss and opted to bat. Alongside Ashlene Edward, James added 35 runs at the top of the order before losing her wicket for 10 in the fifth over. She was the first of back-to-back scalps for fast bowler Holly Charles. Charles also removed James’ fellow West Indies batter, Nerissa Crafton, for a duck.

West Indies bowler and Grenada captain Afy Fletcher sent Cian Felix back to the pavilion for just one run. Skyy Smith contributed seven before falling to Jaeda Tyrell, leaving Saint Lucia at 51-4 approaching the halfway stage.

But batting got more difficult. Edward was dismissed for 35 from 53 balls at the end of the 15th over, and Saint Lucia added just 11 runs for the loss of one wicket in the last five overs, ending at 78-6.

Grenada approached the chase in a no-nonsense mode, as Afy Fletcher and Theresa Thomas lashed together an opening partnership of 46 from 5.3 overs. Fletcher hit 28 from 17 balls, including three fours and two sixes. Thomas carried her bat, making 24 from 22. Cassie Williams added 12 from eight balls to end the misery for Saint Lucia. Grenada overhauled the Saint Lucia score in 7.8 overs to set up a title match preview with hosts St Vincent & the Grenadines on Wednesday.

SVG and Dominica went down to a super over decider in Monday’s second match. Both sides made 138, and the Vincy ladies won the decisive over by three runs.

Saint Lucia play Dominica in their final preliminary game on Wednesday before the two sides meet again for the third-place playoff on Thursday.
