James to lead Windwards in CWI women’s cricket

Five Saint Lucian women, four with international experience, will compete in the Cricket West Indies CG United Women’s Super50 Cup and T20 Blaze from January 10 to February 1 in St Vincent and the Grenadines. Four will play for the Windward Islands and one for the Leewards, as CWI embarks on an epic year for women’s cricket.

West Indies allrounder Zaida James has been named to captain the Windwards, who finished fourth last term. The home squad also includes West Indies senior allrounder Nerissa Crafton, wicketkeeper and top order batter Ashlene Edward, and West Indies Under-19 fast bowler Selena Ross. West Indies veteran Qiana Joseph will play for the Leewards, having relocated to St Kitts & Nevis last year.

All matches in the T20 Blaze will be played at the Arnos Vale Sporting Complex. Fans will be treated to triple headers daily, with matches starting at 9:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and 7:00 p.m., with the final match of the day played under lights.

Following the conclusion of the T20 Blaze, the Super 50 tournament will commence at three grounds, Sion Hill, Park Hill and Cumberland, and games will bowl off at 9:30 a.m. each day. Each team will play three games, after which the top-ranked team will be declared the winner.

Guyana claimed their maiden regional women’s title in last year’s Blaze after an undefeated run in the competition, which culminated in a Super Over victory over Jamaica in the final. Earlier in 2025, Trinidad & Tobago secured the Super 50 crown with a seven-wicket win over Barbados in the final.

The limited-over tournaments will provide a strong competitive platform at the start of a busy cricket calendar for the West Indies Women. The Maroon Warriors will host Sri Lanka for a white-ball series in late February, before doing battle with Australia in an all-format series the following month. This summer will also be a major one for the women, featuring a tri-nation series against Ireland and Pakistan, as well ash the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, for which the regional side has been diligently preparing.

Windward Islands Squad: Zaida James (captain), Holly Charles, Nerissa Crafton, Ashlene Edward, Afy Fletcher, Earnisha Fontaine, Aldith Gasper, Amiah Gilbert, Jannillea Glasgow, Shanel Mckie, Carena Noel, Selena Ross, Abini St. Jean, Jaeda Tyrell
