Alfred reigns again as athlete of the year

The Saint Lucia Athletics Association (SLAA) has rewarded World Athletics bronze medallist Julien Alfred and quarter-miler Marvric Pamphile as its athletes of the year for 2025. The federation celebrated its outstanding athletes, coaches, administrators, and technical officials on January 24, during their annual awards ceremony at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground.

The ceremony was held under the theme, A Legacy of Performance, A Future of Possibilities. The SLAA also presented awards to junior athletes of the year. Double CARIFTA sprint champion Jady Emmanuel won the female title. Record-breaking thrower Denzel Phillips took the male trophy. Based on their performances over the past 12 months, juvenile athletes Avery Maryat and Hadassah Jules were also handed silverware.

Denise Herman of Choiseul Athletics was named coach of the year. Finley Louis of Abilene Wildcats received a coach dedication award, for 20 years of service. At the other end of the spectrum, one of the youngest technical officials, Noya Alexander was picked out as the top volunteer for the year. Former athlete of the year and former national Sportswoman of the Year, Makeba Alcide, was adjudged administrator of the year.

Louise Victor-Frederick, best known as a corporate leader and former beauty queen, reminded the audience that she was once a promising schoolgirl athlete, in a moving speech that spoke to the way athletes like Julien Alfred can provide inspiration well beyond the realm of sports.

Vybe Radio was given the media partnership award.
