GMC, Northern record wins in Bay Bay Cup

Defending national club champions GMC United and Bay Bay Cup holders Northern United FC registered their first wins when the Kenson Casimir Bay Bay Cup football tournament moved to the Grande Riviere Playing Field for the first time on Wednesday night, February 4.

GMC, much-changed since their 2025 club title win, won the Grande Riviere derby 4-0 over Dominators FC to go second in Group A. After a goalless first half, Mekhi Stanislaus opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, before an absolute screamer from Under-16 striker Shaquil Martelly, the smallest man on the pitch, doubled the lead a minute later.

Tonius Simon then netted a brace in the space of five minutes to seal the deal.

“All in all, it was a very good game. We started a bit slow in the first half, [and] Dominators were a bit physical, due respect to them, we played on their home ground,” GMC head coach Daren Gaspard said.

“But at halftime, we went in with a plan for the second half, and we executed properly. You could see the changes had an impact on the game.”

Two GMC players, Sherman Augustin and Ajani Lebourne, died in 2025. They have also had some transfers out, leading them to rely on younger players like Martelly and goalkeeper Jahim Henry, with incoming transfers such as Trevon St Prix providing stability. Ahead of a crucial clash with table toppers New Generation FC on Sunday, Gaspard struck a guarded tone.

“Sunday’s game, we have to approach it cautiously. The objective is to get the three points and we are hoping that Dominators can grant us a favour by getting a draw in their game, which would give us the nod going into the next stage of the tournament,” he said.

Northern United, meanwhile, kept themselves in the hunt for a semifinals spot with a 7-1 win over Gros Islet Veterans.

A brace from Lyndon Constantine, along with goals from Devonte Herman and Nicholas Lawrence, gave Northern a 4-0 cushion at halftime. After the break, storied international striker Earl Ball Hog Jean converted a penalty for the Vets, but Kenrick Antoine, Thierry Morille, and Samiel Louisien netted in the second half to take Northern second in Group B on goal difference.
