Twenty Years Strong: Hypasounds Celebrates Music, Legacy, and Home in Barbados

This June, Barbados celebrates one of its own.

On June 20, international recording artist Hypasounds commemorates 20 years in music with a landmark anniversary concert, Soca For Her: The Coronation, a powerful reflection on a career built, nurtured, and admired by fans, supporters and peers.

For many, Hypasounds first entered their lives through Sunshine Girl in 2006. A timeless record, it saw him welcomed into the hearts of a predominantly female fanbase who fell in love with his sound, sweet lyrics, and captivating presence.

Even then, Hypasounds carried a quiet confidence, the same steady assurance that continues to guide him today.

What began as a feel-good anthem soon became the foundation of a much larger journey, one that would see him evolve from emerging artist into globally touring performer, songwriter, producer, and respected creative force across multiple markets.

While his roots include DJ culture, Hypasounds’ story is ultimately one of artistic expansion.

Over two decades, he has steadily grown into an international recording artist, releasing music, collaborating with producers, songwriters, and artists across the Caribbean diaspora, and performing throughout Europe, North America, and the Caribbean. His catalogue reflects both versatility and depth, a defining sound as he describes it, the ‘boom’.

Yet, unlike many artists whose success pulls them permanently overseas,

Hypasounds made a deliberate choice to remain based in Barbados.

It is a deeply personal decision, one rooted in family, particularly his daughter Kenza, who continually reminds him that there is life beyond the stage. Staying close to home allows him to be present as a father while continuing to build his career on his own terms.

By keeping Barbados as his base, Hypasounds has been able to develop not only his artistry but also his philanthropy, mentoring emerging creatives, supporting youth initiatives, and investing back into community and culture.

His impact stretches beyond music.

Alongside his recording career, he has consistently given back. He serves as an ambassador for the Holetown Festival, delivers inspirational talks at his alma mater, and remains passionate about uplifting young people. For Hypasounds, success has always meant more than visibility. It means responsibility.

“Twenty years in music teaches you patience,” he reflects. “It teaches you gratitude.

And it reminds you that every stage, from your first song to your latest project, matters.”

Soca For Her on June 20 is set to honour that full journey. Conceptually, The Coronation symbolises the significance of reaching two decades in the entertainment industry.

“When I began my career, I had a desire to be the best, build a legacy, and have the best fans,” he shares. “The fans I have are the most amazing, supportive, and beautiful people. My legacy is still being written, but reaching 20 years in this industry is no easy feat. It must be acknowledged, celebrated, and respected. I am who I am because of my determination, desire, and my fans. That never goes unnoticed.”

Fans can expect a carefully curated experience, moving through the eras of his career, from early records like Dutti, How She Like It, Roll It and Sugar Rush to his more recent international releases such as Made Fuh Dat, Perfect Man and Happy.

Hypasounds will be supported by a live band, special guests, and moments that speak to growth, resilience, and his creativity.

His coronation story reflects a career rooted in consistency, building steadily, staying grounded, and showing that excellence takes commitment to be the best. It is also a reminder that Caribbean artists can thrive globally while remaining connected to their community.

As Crop Over season approaches, preparation for this concert invites reflection on identity, creativity, and legacy. Hypasounds’ 20-year celebration stands as a powerful symbol of what sustained artistry looks like.

Not overnight success. Not viral fame. But two decades of evolution, commitment, and quiet excellence.

This June in Barbados, the music will tell that story.
