Crusita Descartes-Peluis, formerly Acting Police Commissioner, is now Police Commissioner.
Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, who announced the historic acting appointment in October last year, confirmed her elevation to the post of Commissioner.
“She has been appointed until June this year,” Pierre, responsible for National Security, told reporters on the sidelines of a House of Assembly meeting on Tuesday.
The confirmation came amid a surge in gun incidents that claimed the lives of four men on Independence Day.
Two men sustained gunshot injuries in Vieux Fort, whereas one died in Soufriere, and a police officer-involved shooting resulted in the death of another man in Bexon.
Prime Minister Pierre told reporters that it was difficult to deal with shootings.
“If you notice, it looks like revenge. It looks like retaliation, but we are working on it,” Pierre said.
“We’re trying our best. The crime situation does not please anybody. The crime situation does not make anyone happy. What we are doing is we are giving the police force the necessary resources. It is a work in progress. It didn’t start now. It has been there for a long time,” he explained.
Saint Lucia has recorded 12 homicides for the year, including two fatal police shootings.
