The Saint Lucia Fire Service (SLFS) has called on citizens to use the island’s beaches responsibly after a suspected drowning on Sunday at East Winds.
Police have identified the deceased as 17-year-old Zion Hunte of Gros Islet.
“It is advisable to wear a life jacket as necessary and also to inform family and friends at the beach when conducting water recreation,” SLFS Assistant Divisional Officer Mabius Francis said.
In a statement Monday, Francis said there are no lifeguards at public beaches on the island.
But he advised that at the first appearance of someone in distress, persons should immediately call 911 for help.
The SLFS official said they should also seek assistance from watercraft operators in the area to effect a possible rescue.
He observed that Saint Lucia was experiencing high temperatures and humidity.
As a result, Francis advised citizens to consume adequate water to maintain hydration and reduce the possible occurrence of heat-related medical conditions.
