Guyana police say four male teenagers are in custody concerning a fire that gutted the St. Angela’s Girl’s Hostel building in Karasabai Village, Region Nine.
Seventeen girls and two dormitory officials in the building during the early Thursday morning blaze escaped unhurt.
The privately-owned Stabroek News quoted a police statement saying four male students confessed to committing the crime.
According to the publication, Thursday afternoon’s police statement disclosed that officers contacted and interviewed the four alleged suspects in the presence of Commander, Region #9; the Regional Education Officer, Region #9; and their parents, and they all ‘confessed to the planning and executing of the crime’.
State-owned Guyana Chronicle said it understood that threats were made after the caretaker chased the boys from the premises.
Less than two weeks ago, a ‘maliciously set’ Mahdia Secondary School girls’ dormitory fire killed twenty youngsters and injured several others.
Investigators have charged a fifteen-year-old girl, whom they suspect started the devastating blaze after school officials confiscated her mobile telephone, with murder.
A magistrate remanded the accused in custody at a juvenile detention facility when she first appeared virtually in court.
