The Ministry of Agriculture began distributing 500 one-thousand-gallon water tanks to livestock farmers last week aimed at helping them cope amid a prolonged drought.
The Ministry hopes to distribute another 500 tanks to crop farmers within the next few weeks.
Agriculture Minister Alfred Prospere told reporters on Monday that the distribution was under the World Bank Food and Nutrition Insecurity Project.
“We are going through a serious drought period right now, and at this time of year, it is not very comfortable for farmers,” Prospere noted at Monday’s regular pre-cabinet press briefing.
He pointed out that many farmers are far from a water source and depend on the rain.
Prospere expressed the hope that the provision of water tanks would not only assist farmers in coping with the drought but also enable them to harvest and store water for their livestock and crops.
Last week, Water and Sewerage Company Inc. (WASCO) announced a ‘concerning reduction’ in water levels at various abstraction points islandwide due to the ongoing dry conditions affecting Saint Lucia.
