Opposition leader Allen Chastanet has extolled the benefits of national health insurance for all, asserting that a fundamental difference between his United Workers Party (UWP) and the ruling Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) pertains to the approach to healthcare.
The Chastanet administration lost the July 26, 2021, general elections in an SLP landslide.
However, the former Prime Minister said one of the initiatives his Government was about to introduce was the national health insurance.
“This would have meant that each and every Saint Lucian would have had up to $75,000 worth of health coverage every year. This would have allowed you to visit our health centres, hospitals, or your private doctor at your convenience,” Chastanet wrote on Facebook.
He stated that the national health insurance would have allowed people to get medication and access to a basket of needed health tests.
“Health insurance would have also ensured that there was a dedicated revenue source to keep our hospitals operating efficiently, eliminating many of the issues which the system currently endures,” the Micoud South MP noted.
Chastanet disclosed that his administration worked with the World Bank for more than two years, preparing for ”this revolutionary programme which would have benefited all Saint Lucians’.
But he wrote that upon assuming office in 2021, the SLP administration scrapped the project.
“You deserve better,” Chastanet declared.

“dedicated revenue source”. A cured patient is a lost customer. How about measures to ensure people don’t end up in the medical system in the first place? Most of the health issues facing this country are self inflicted.
Fix the health care system first before health assurance. How stupid one will be to provide health assurance and the hospital is like a death sentence chamber.

Chas, you can see everything in opposition. You were in office for 5+ years, what did you do? I will not say like other St. Lucians, nothing, because you gave away 7 million dollars for no vaccine 24 million to a hotel for lunch for your cabinet. So Chas pleased keep quiet.
