The Saint Lucia Chess Federation is celebrating another triumph as Justin James and D’Yorni Cilpa secured first and second place, respectively, in the XXI IRT Hybrid of the South Sub-2200 Tournament.
Held April 26-27, the event featured players with FIDE Elo ratings below 2200, with the Saint Lucian duo competing against 30 opponents from across the Americas.
Played on tornelo.com, the six-round tournament saw Justin James, a student at Sir Arthur Lewis Community College and reigning Saint Lucian national junior champion, claim victory. His final rating of 1830 reflected a 67-point gain.
Meanwhile, D’Yorni Cilpa, winner of the National Secondary Schools Championship for St. Mary’s College, earned second place, boosting his rating to 1737 with a 73-point increase.
Saint Lucia was further represented in the U1600 division by Chelsea Wahid, Jamari Joseph, and Vernesa James.

Organised by the Hybrid Circuit of the Americas under FIDE Online Chess Regulations, the tournament included participants from the Cayman Islands, Colombia, Ecuador, Jamaica, Saint Lucia and Venezuela.
