Alfred finishes second at Prefontaine Classic

Julien Alfred suffered her first loss for the year on Saturday, taking second place in the women’s 100m event at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon.

Alfred, the Olympic champion, ran 10.77 seconds to finish behind Melissa Jefferson-Wooden of the USA. The Olympic bronze medallist ran 10.75 to extend her own unbeaten streak. The fastest woman in the world this year, Jefferson-Wooden won her fourth consecutive 100m race.

The American began brilliantly, leading from the gun into a -1.5 wind. Alfred stepped up through 60m, briefly appearing to take over the lead. But the eventual winner rode her excellent drive phase and held off a spirited challenge from the Caribbean sprint queen. The two were well ahead of the rest of the field, reflecting their impressive form this season.

Jefferson-Wooden claimed a couple of other big scalps on the way to victory. Defending Prefontaine champion and 2023 World champion Sha’Carri Richardson of the USA finished last. Richardson, the Olympic silver medallist, ran 11.19, a season’s best for her.

Also in the race was 37-year-old Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith. The Ivorian took a good step forward with a season’s best 10.90 in third.
