Talented young Saint Lucian cyclist Denver Alphonse Jr is in Canada for the only world-class road race in North America, the Tour de l’Abitibi. Alphonse, who turned 18 on Monday, has been in Quebec for the best part of two weeks, training with Liftow-Kitchener Waterloo Cycling Academy under coach Robert Good.
Hailing from the Dennery community of La Caye, Alphonse Jr has been doing up to 70 kilometres per day since arriving in Canada. The seven-stage race covers 684.7 km over six consecutive days of racing, starting from Tuesday.
The only junior-level race on the continent sponsored by the International Cycling Union (UCI), the Tour de l’Abitibi has been held in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Quebec since 1969. It has since become an international competition and is part of the Junior Nations’ Cup.
This week kicks off a busy summer for Alphonse, a graduate of Entrepot Secondary School. He will stay in Quebec for a training camp at the UCI satellite training centre in Bromont, from July 23rd to August 8th. Thereafter, he will compete at the Caribbean Cycling Union Junior Championships in Barbados at the end of August, and the UCI Junior World Championships in September.
His time in Canada is made possible by the Saint Lucia Olympic Committee, Invest Saint Lucia, and UCI Solidarity.
