GPO Employee Formally Charged in Drugs Case

Eldon Simon Renee, a General Post Office employee, was formally charged this week in connection with the interception of a shipment of cannabis resin worth an estimated EC$320,800.

The accused faces multiple charges, including importation of controlled drugs under the Drug (Prevention of Misuse) Act, possession of controlled drugs with the Intent to supply, fraudulent evasion, and illegally imported goods under the Customs Act.

A joint operation involving the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force’s Gangs, Narcotics and Firearms Unit, along with the Customs and Excise Department, intercepted the cannabis resin on July 29. The drugs were concealed in a package labelled as food items.

Upon inspection, authorities discovered 80 rectangular bricks of suspected cannabis resin (hashish), each stamped with “Made in California”.

Renee was arrested on August 6 and appeared before the First District Court on August 11, when he was granted bail set at $40,000, payable in cash or with suitable surety.
