Clarke bowls brilliantly, but Blitz prevail in Canada Super 60

An excellent bowling display from Saint Lucia’s McKenny Clarke was not quite enough to earn the Vancouver Kings victory on Saturday in the Canada Super 60. The 22-year-old fast bowler took 3-7 but the all-round ability of David Wiese carried table-topping Brampton Blitz to a six-wicket win.

Chasing 112 at BC Place in Vancouver, the Blitz appeared to be in deep trouble at 30-4 after four overs. Clarke, the former West Indies Under-19 pacer, was the principal architect of their collapse. He got Will Smeed for duck, Martin Guptill for four, and Alex Davies for eight. Clarke now has five wickets for the season and leads the economy table, yielding just 5.20 runs per over.

Wiese, the Saint Lucia Kings captain, also took 3-7 to restrict the Vancouver Kings to 111-8 from their 10 overs, and followed up with an unbeaten 62 off just 27 balls to steer the Blitz home. Just two balls were left to be bowled when the 40-year-old Namibian hoisted his sixth six to seal the deal for his team. Yuvraj Samra added 19 not out off 10 balls.

Clarke took 1-13 on Sunday, October 12, against the Toronto Sixers, helping hold them to 96-9. Jaskaran Singh took four wickets with his medium pace, and South African batter Obus Pienaar needed just 18 balls to get to a match-winning 67, as the Kings qualified for the playoffs on Day 5. The Kings will face the Montreal Tigers.
