During the Caribbean Week of Agriculture in October, the host minister, Saboto S Caesar, Minister of Agriculture in St Vincent and the Grenadines, highlighted the need for better post-disaster support for countries. St Vincent and the Grenadines was among the Caribbean countries devastated by Hurricane Beryl in July 2024.
The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) has developed a climate resilience portal, on which it publishes information dedicated to hurricane resilience.
This series of information alerts is also in keeping with the council’s directive to support post-disaster recovery across CRFM Member States.
Hurricane Beryl, Grenada
The CRFM community is encouraged to contribute towards Jamaica’s full and speedy recovery by donating directly through the official Support Jamaica portal to assist with the damage resulting from Hurricane Melissa.
The eye of Hurricane Melissa started affecting Jamaica on October 28. The eye was located 15 miles east of Montego Bay at 5 pm, with maximum sustained winds near 145 miles per hour according to the National Hurricane Center. The system has now tied as for the strongest hurricane on record in the Atlantic Basin.
Melissa has begun causing catastrophic damage to national and personal assets in the affected areas. The CRFM has indicated their intention to join with the Caribbean community and Jamaican residents to map the road to recovery as quickly as possible in the storm’s aftermath.
