Final count confirms Prospere as Dennery South MP

The final recount in Dennery South confirmed Alfred Prospere’s victory in Monday’s general election, though it widened his margin to 59 votes.

The result remained the narrowest in an election otherwise dominated by the Saint Lucia Labour Party’s near‑total control of the House of Assembly.

Incumbent Prospere, the SLP candidate, was initially declared the winner by just 39 votes on election night.

The final tally stood at 1,566 for Prospere and 1,507 for Benson Emile of the United Workers Party, according to sources close to the counting process. The preliminary tally was 1,495 votes to 1,456.

Dennery South also recorded one of the highest turnouts, with 56% of registered electors voting, second only to Soufrière’s 61%.

Under Section 65 of the Elections Act (1979), the final count is conducted the morning after polling. At 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 2, the returning officer, in the presence of candidate agents, retrieved the ballot boxes and reviewed rejected ballots before confirming totals.

Prospere had previously unseated UWP incumbent Edmund Estephane in 2021, winning 1,548 to 1,364.

The Elections Act requires the writ of declaration to be delivered to the Chief Electoral Officer by Friday, December 5, unless objections are filed.

Now serving as Minister for Agriculture until the naming of a new Cabinet, and formerly Chief Forestry Officer, Prospere becomes at least the third successive two-term MP for Dennery South.
