Nestor posts double-double in North Texas defeat

Saint Lucia’s Megan Nestor recorded her sixth double-double of the season on Saturday evening, January 3, as the University of North Texas women’s basketball team lost to South Florida away in the Yuengling Center. The Mean Green were beaten 77-61, taking their record to 7-7 for the season.

USF took a 22-10 lead in the first quarter behind a 54 per cent mark from the field, and UNT were never able to come to grips with the deficit. Runs in the second and third quarter got them as close as five points, and in the final period, they closed it to 65-61. But the Bulls regained control with a 6-0 run.

Aysia Proctor scored seven of the Mean Green’s first nine points in the fourth quarter, finishing with 18 points to lead all players on the night. Nestor, the 6-4 big from the fishing village of Canaries, added 14 points on 5-13 shooting from the field and 4-6 from the line.

She led both teams in rebounding with 10 boards, adding a team-high two blocks and a steal in a career-high 33 minutes. She now averages 12.4 points and 11.4 rebounds per contest, the latter mark pacing the American Conference.

North Texas will be back home for one game against East Carolina on Tuesday, before resuming their road schedule.
