Windwards win again in Women’s Super 50

The Windwards Islands made it two on the trot, as they earned another dominant win in the Cricket West Indies CG United Women’s Super 50 Cup, beating the Leeward Islands by three wickets on Thursday, January 29, at the Cumberland Playing Field in St Vincent and the Grenadines. The Windwards were without Zaida James.

Leeward Islands Women won the toss and elected to bat first,  but they were never able to put together any significant partnerships. Only Saint Lucia’s Qiana Joseph, now resident in St Kitts and Nevis, offered substantial resistance, with 44 runs from 54 balls, including seven fours.

Kayzg Boyles was the first wicket for Windwards captain Jannillea Glasgow in the fifth over, going for five. Reniece Boyce added 12, losing her wicket with the score 2-54. Tonya Martin and Amanda Edwards followed soon thereafter, before Joseph was joined by Jahzara Calxton for a brief flourish. They put on 22 before Joseph finally met her demise, immediately followed by Shawnisha Hector for one.

Claxton stuck around to contribute 25 in the lower order, as the Leewards were 125 all out in the 35th over. Aldith Gasper took three wickets for 28 runs, Shanel McKie got 2-12, and Glasgow 2-23. The Windwards bowled 16 extras.

Ashlene Edward, the sole Saint Lucian in the Windwards lineup, went for just four, and wickets fell at regular intervals thereafter. Abini St Jean, Amiah Gilbert, Afy Fletcher, Earnisha Fontaine, and Carena Noel were all in the pavilion by the 23rd over, with the score 71-6.

Glasgow, however, is one of the top batters in this competition. The West Indies allrounder found a willing ally in Shanel McKie, and together the two carried the Windwards to the brink of victory, at 122-7 in the 34th over. McKie went for 22 from 29 balls.

Glasgow, meanwhile, stuck around until the end, guiding the Windwards to 126-7. She finished unbeaten on 54 runs, inclusive of six fours, as the Windwards polished the chase off in the 35th over, with 95 balls remaining.

The top-of-the-table Windwards play Guyana on Saturday, January 31, at Park Hill Playing Field, Colonarie. Guyana beat Jamaica by five wickets on Tuesday, and then were swamped by Trinidad and Tobago by nine wickets on Thursday.
