SJC, CCSS, Beanefield, Choiseul open U16 netball with wins

The Department of Youth Development and Sports tipped off its Under-16 Netball Tournament on Wednesday at the Beausejour Gymnasium in Group A, and the Micoud Court in Group B contenders battled in spirited, physical encounters. St Joseph’s Convent, Castries Comprehensive Secondary School, Beanefield Comprehensive and Choiseul Secondary opened with wins.

The performance of the day belonged to SJC, who dismantled Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School 31-6 behind a virtuoso shooting display.

Goal attack Xanaiia Emmanus, who also plays for her school’s Under-19 team, showed off her senior experience, missing just four of her 29 shots on goals. She was supported by goal shooters Brianna Komolafe (3-4) and Laila Sylvester (3-11).

For LHCSS, shooter Jeannae Philogene netted 4-5. Goal attack Alexi Phillip converted 2-3.

SJC set the tone early to lead 6-1 at the close of the first quarter, before an unanswered 10-0 run in the second period to take a 16-1 cushion into halftime. LHCSS found some rhythm in the third quarter to share the frame 4-4, but SJC slammed the door shut in the final stanza, outscoring their opponents 11-1 to complete the rout.

Earlier, CCSS held Entrepot Secondary School to just two goals, winning 13-2. Luwandre Antoine led CCSS’s scoring with 8-16. Goal shooter Valencia Seraphin contributed 5-12. Entrepot’s lone scores came via goal shooter Jahnii Charlery, 2-2.

Down at Micoud, Game 1 produced a competitive duel between Beanefield Comprehensive and Vieux Fort Comprehensive, with Beanefield holding their nerve to secure a 15-12 win.

Goal shooter Jerannie Marquis anchored the circle with 9-12, while Annia St Ange provided reliable support with 6-10. For VFCSS, Bernege Joseph registered 9-15, alongside Hailey Charles and Leasana Sadoo, both 3-7.

In the afternoon clash, Choiseul Secondary silenced the home crowd, turning in a polished display to overcome Micoud Secondary 18-6.

Malia Isidore led all scorers with 12 goals from 17 attempts. Kevlyn Fostin made 6-8. Micoud’s goal attack made just 6-15 in the losing effort.
