Illinois State University Group Does Some Brushing Up At Canon Laurie Anglican Primary

A group from Illinois State University has partnered with International Children’s Outreach (ICO) to spruce up the Canon Laurie Anglican Primary School in Castries.

ICO allows college students to volunteer, usually for a week, while living with host families wherever the volunteers serve to experience local culture.

The University of Illinois partnered with ICO to paint at the Canon Laurie Anglican, fix the institution’s fence, and undertake classroom activities with the students.

“We are here for a whole week so everyday we have different projects,” a spokeswoman for the group, Maddie Raftery, disclosed.

Rafterty said the volunteers arrived on Sunday.

She told St Lucia Times that ICO provided the materials to facilitate the facelift.

“Our university has a programme called alternative breaks, a service programme where we get to travel and see different places and partner with organisations there,” Rafterty explained.

Thirteen Illinois University volunteers and four locals are taking part in the project.

  1. Sad state of affairs when outside sources are more concerned for our environmental conditions than ourselves. Kudos for all involved in the initiative and I’m positive that the occupants of that facility greatly appreciate it.
