On Tuesday, Education Minister Shawn Edward lauded opposition Senator Angelina Phera Polius on attaining a doctorate in Education.

Polius achieved a doctorate in Education from the online Cyprus-headquartered UNICAF University last year.

The graduation ceremony occurred in Malawi last week.

Polius already had a Master’s Degree in new Education and a Bachelor’s Degree with first-class honours in Education.

She currently teaches adults around the globe online on a part-time basis.

“I must place on the record my sincerest expressions of congratulations to Senator Angelina Phera Polius of Dennery North, Mr. Speaker, on the attainment of her doctorate,” Education Minister Shawn Edward told the House of Assembly.

Edward said the veteran educator’s achievement should inspire all Dennery North youngsters.

“Irrespective of what your circumstances would have been growing up, if you have the determination to succeed, Mr. Speaker, you can scale some heights in academia that at times can appear to be insurmountable,” the Education Minister noted.

“And so today, notwithstanding that she is a political adversary Mr. Speaker, I want to place on the record my congratulations,” he told the House.

But Edward said he would remain vigilant as the MP for Dennery North and the chief custodian of the ruling Saint Lucia Labour Party’s interests in the constituency.

His comments attracted some chuckles.

The incumbent, Edward, retained the Dennery North seat in the face of a challenge from Polius at the July 26, 2021, general elections.

  2. Determination, commitment, perseverance and dedication = recipe for success in whatever area/field one aspires to endeavor. Congrats and best wishes on your achievement Senator.

  3. Since we’re talking about Education. Is Unicaf on the list of accredited Universities at the MOE?

  4. hope doctor doesnt mean selfishness..many of us tend to get to that level……so much being educated and no progress in this country…no one takes a stand for anything……

  5. Congratulations to Ms Polius. Now let us see a better quality of politics in Saint Lucia with your doctorate. We need new ideas and a new polical attitude that the great people of Saint Lucia deserves. Time for these stale bakes to go and new blood with a visionary outlook to transform the nation. These current old hags need to go cause they have done nothing for the pay 20 years to progress the nation. Saint Lucia’s potential is under utilized and thus the nation has under achieved….now let’s see what you can do…over to you…
