Tropical Depression Thirteen developed into Tropical Storm Lee in the Atlantic on Tuesday, and forecasters expect it to become a major hurricane.
In its 6:00 pm weather forecast, the Saint Lucia Meteorological Services said at 5:00 pm, the storm’s centre was near latitude 13.2 North, longitude 41.8 West.
Lee was moving west-northwest near 16 mph or 26 km/h with maximum sustained winds near 45 mph or 75 km/h, with higher gusts, and should continue for the next few days.
According to the Saint Lucia Meteorological Services, Lee is forecast to be a hurricane within ‘a couple of days’ and will likely become a major hurricane by Friday.
It said interests in the Leeward Islands should monitor the storm.
Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center has forecast that Lee could reach Category 4 strength by Saturday, bringing impacts to the Leeward Islands before that.
“While it is too soon to determine the location and magnitude of these possible impacts, interests in this area should monitor the progress of Lee and further updates to the forecast,” the hurricane center warned.
Weather experts expect Lee to continue strengthening into a 145-mph storm by Sunday.
