The National Council on Public Transportation (NCOPT) and the police were set to meet on Monday to address the pressing issue of road safety amid a worrying surge in road accidents.
Just last week alone, eleven schoolchildren were among over 30 individuals who sustained injuries in multiple-casualty road incidents in Castries and Vieux Fort.
In addition, so far in 2024, road accidents have claimed six lives.
NCOPT President Godfrey Ferdinand believes there should be a holistic approach to addressing road safety.
He elaborated that an accident is not a simple result of brake failure or speeding but a complex interplay of various factors, highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach to road safety.
Ferdinand told St. Lucia Times that road conditions, the health of motorists, carelessness, and mechanical failure all contribute to road incidents.
At the same time, the NCOPT President spoke of the need for more traffic checks and vehicle inspections.
“Why isn’t there a speed gun? Why aren’t there breathalyzers? Why isn’t there a noise meter? Why isn’t there a tint meter?” He asked.

It’s ironic how you will get a ticket for not wearing seat belt or wearing a helmet. Neither of which affects anybody but you.But the real issues that affect other road users such as speeding and drunk driving,there is nothing in place to penalize the perpetrators. No breathalyzer nor radar guns. I think wearing a seat belt or helmet should be a choice.it only affects the individual.
Stop harassing people for that shit and focus on the real issues.

Anonymous….you are right about that analogy with seatbelts vs drunk driving etc. Honestly I don’t think the transport and traffic authorities have the brains to decipher this. It had to take the NCOPT to make a statement and drive a response to the high frequency of road collision (not all are accidents).
The is no remedy for careless driving, the facts are that we must implement the Smyth systems road worthy guide to our system, more signage and traffic law enforcement..
