The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has called on the Caribbean, Central America, and Mexico to strengthen preventive measures against dengue.
On Friday, PAHO issued an epidemiological alert.
The alert emphasised strengthening surveillance, diagnosis, and vector control actions.
 It also stressed preparing health services for proper patient management to prevent complications and avoid possible overcrowding.
The PAHO alert was due to a dengue fever spike in the southern hemisphere and the beginning of the season of increased transmission in the northern hemisphere.
The organisation noted that in most cases, the mosquito-borne viral disease has no symptoms.Â
However, when symptoms do occur, they usually include high fever, headache, body aches, nausea and rash.Â
Although most people recover within one to two weeks, some can develop severe forms that require hospitalization and can be fatal without prompt, proper treatment.
