Infrastructure Minister Stephenson King has noted the deterioration of rehabilitated roads after utility digs and the need to address the problem.
“You normally have the Department of Infrastructure going out and rehabilitating roads. What happens soon after rehabilitation, our friendly utilities would come and dig up the road,” the Senior Minister told reporters.
According to King, soon afterward, the road begins to deteriorate.
He noted that the Department of Infrastructure was in the process of rehabilitating Chaussee Road in Castries.
“But before we do that, if the only way we can have our water lines is to place them beneath the road, then we must change the lines,” King stated.
“So in the City what we are doing is to put in new water lines to ensure that when we construct the road, that there is no interference maybe for another ten, fifteen years which is the lifespan of those roads being constructed,” the Minister stated.
Regarding Saint Lucia’s recent brush with Hurricane Beryl, the Minister said the island suffered no significant infrastructure damage.
King said much of the response was clearing roads of fallen trees, unblocking culverts, and drains, and dealing with ‘minor incidents’ including clearing waterways.
“Generally, we seemed to have survived quite nicely and I do hope that Mother Nature spares us in the months ahead as we continue to endure the Hurricane Season,” the Castries North MP stated.

King always concerned about something but doing nothing about it.
Why does it seem like the ministers in government are just reporters and not the ones we put in place to steer the country to where it needs to go ?
Well said visionless.
Govt. pays water bills, WASCO digs up the roads to effect connections and repairs and would subsequently engage a private contractor to effect road reinstatement. Min. of Infrastructure has that capacity to effect such works therefore the Ministry should protect their investment by effecting the repairs and offsetting the cost against WASCO bills.
Duh roads, again! Gassa dem tings are just bad. Even before WASCO or LUCELEC put a rusty pickaxe on dem, dey already broke a thousand struts. King is generating more economic activity than all the ministries put together. Yeah! He is forcing muhn to buy vehicle parts. He deserves a Nobel prize in Economics.
Well well Mr King deterioration of roads. You have seen Gais Bois with your own eyes and it is worse now yet you have not done anything! 20 plus years this road has been in a state of disrepair yet you do nothing…
Wasco dig up a bit of tarmac and all Hell is let loose.
You should hang your head in shame after all the time you have spent in office and not done anything
Mate always throwing pawol for himself! BTW….la clery road northbound by NIPRO, why is there a heap of material in the road….I can see a car going airborne after hitting that thing….lawlessness at all levels in saint lucia. Back to King, what’s with all the talking bro….alot of those things fall under your portfolio, why go to the media as if you juts east US to feel sorry for you or as if you want us to believe that you are doing soo soo much!
Minister King it is ur Department responsibility to let wasco n lucelec know of ur plans to rehabiliate roads so they are aware n could budget for replacement of worn out pipes. When you have heavy machinery on an already compromised pipe what do you expect? Caye Mage road is a typical example of this and lucelec relocating poles after the road is paced leaving dangerous holes in the road. Communication n works is really not communicating
