At their just-ended summit in Grenada, Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders discussed strengthening their countries’ legislative responses to violent crime, firearm trafficking, and corruption.
Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell told an end-of-summit news conference that the leaders also discussed a regional approach to comprehensively reviewing all firearms-related legislation.
Mitchell explained that the objective was to find a more common platform and ensure “judicial consistency” in sentencing.
“The issue of bail was also extensively discussed because the empirical data is clear that many of the most violent crimes, particularly those associated with firearms, are committed by persons who are known to the police, who are known to the law and who often are on bail,” the Grenada PM, who is an Attorney at Law stated.
He said the regional leaders discussed developing a common approach to minimising the risk of people on bail repeating offences and the impact of crime and violence on young people as victims and perpetrators.
In this regard, Mitchell spoke of the need for social and cultural interventions as part of an appropriate response.
He said Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley has agreed to host a follow-up regional meeting on crime before the end of this year.
In April last year, Trinidad and Tobago hosted a Regional Symposium addressing Crime and Violence as a Public Health Issue.
The theme was: ‘Violence as a Public Health Issue – The Crime Challenge’.
The Trinidad and Tobago symposium sought to promote dialogue and regional action aimed at violence reduction and crime prevention.Â

To all those who get all itchy down below when I post my missives, take notes. It’s obvious that one of the greatest issues with our society is that people or persons cannot take criticism when their beliefs/ ideologies come under scrutiny. At least Caricom leaders are looking in the right direction for a solution to society’s issues but they can’t move fast enough to enact the policies to make society better. I wish them all speed in enacting robust policies to stem the tide of societal decline. What is quite disconcerting is the level of intellect and lack of understanding of the greater issues of society…some complain about the length of my posts but yet it says a lot about their ability or rather their in-ability to read and get down to the nitty gritty of the argument/ discussion…. Some criticise without even offering up some tangible solutions to the subject at hand…yet indeed, I defend your right to express yourself as you see fit but I will continue to post my comments free from fear and under the freedom of speech and expression act to highlight the issues affecting our society. I am as patriotic a Lucian as any other who wants a better society….those who don’t like it, I say to you à la Juke Bois…TOOOF !!!
