Julien Alfred is an Olympic CHAMPION!

Three Americans lined up, the most since 2012. For the first time since 1996, there was only one Jamaican. And Saint Lucia made a first-ever appearance in the final of the women’s 100m dash at the Olympic level. In Lane 6, Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred was flanked by Americans, Sha’Carri Richardson and Melissa Jeferson. Tia Clayton, the 19-year-old Jamaican went in Lane 4, just outside of the veteran African champion, Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith.

Rain in Saint Lucia, rain in Paris. Cool conditions for what promised to be an historic final.

And it was the 23-year-old from Ciceron making history, running a national record 10.72 seconds for the gold medal on the purple tracks of the Stade de France. Richardson was a distant second in 10.87, and Jefferson third in 10.92.

Alfred now adds the Olympic title to her World Indoors 60m title, both firsts for Saint Lucia.
