Relative Makes Road Safety Appeal After Fatal Laborie Incident

A female relative of Saint Lucia’s latest fatal accident victim has urged road users to exercise greater caution.

The relative’s appeal came after a vehicle struck 41-year-old Kenny Florent, alias ‘Mad’ on the Laborie Highway near Relief Stress Bar on Saturday.

The incident occurred at about 10:30 pm.

Eyewitnesses reported that Florent was crossing the road when the vehicle struck him, and he died at the scene.

“Some people are drinking and driving. They not careful. Some of them sleeping while they driving. They don’t drive slowly. They have speed,” the deceased’s close relative told St. Lucia Times.

She also stated that the authorities must implement traffic control measures, such as speed bumps, near entertainment venues like the one Florent had visited.

“They said he was crossing to go on the other side to take a plate of food when he got struck down by the car,” the woman told St. Lucia Times.

The female relative recalled that she last saw Florent on Friday.

“I gave him some food, he ate and then he left. On Saturday I cook again and waited for him but I did not see him,” she recalled.

Later that day, a male sibling of the deceased called her to announce Florent’s tragic demise.

The relative said Florent, a farmer, would have been 42 years old later this month.

She recalled that he was very helpful and loved to visit karaoke sessions where people often declared that he was the worst singer they had ever heard.

  1. Condolences to the family. It is sad that this happend, however you cannot just lay the blame the driver, on a highway in the evening especially in that area by Relief stress bar. As a frequent traveller of that route, the bar owner/s should take some level of blame. The bar has two locations, one on each side of the main highway, their patrons park recklessly, where drivers are forced to leave their side of the road to avoid hitting parked vehicles which their patrons drive. I am sure some of the patrons who cross the highway are intoxicated as well. Yes the police should be vigilant about the spot, because if you have such business, you should ensure your patrons park in your designated parking and your parking should be large enough to accommodate the crowd that you attract. Another disaster waiting to happen is Empire 758. All dangers to motorists and passengers.

  2. Is there nothing done properly in our country? Why is it there are such avoidable incidents every other day in Saint Lucia. We hear it all the time. A road traffic accident, a vehicle turn over, or some calamity of sorts. Why are people not taking heed and care for life and limb as they go about their daily duties? Why is road safety not addressed based on the number of road incidents we have had over the past few months?. Are we a society of children who needs every aspect of our lives to be dictated by government? If road traffic accidents are on the rise, does the road user not think that he/she should be careful when using the roads so that everyone is Safe? It appears that when a fatality happens no one recalibrates and say let’s be careful…. everyone simply carry on as usual like headless chickens with no common sense. What a state of affairs we are in as a nation.

  3. my words exactly. that area is not a good place to have a bar people drinking and want to cross the road there what you expect to happen on a highway

  4. This very day I almost stuck 3 people near that bar.. they were on the road whilst vehicles were parked on both sides I’m trying to get away from a vehicle coming from the opposite direction. Authorities have to put strick rules in place for that establishment.

  5. Lol. Was this guy walking for progress. Is like things getting worst. Road Fatalities and Accidents on the rise. To the sister who mentioned Speed Bumps. FACT. In the last 5 years we have added no less than 6 speed bumps on our roads and have actually seen an increase in accidents and road fatalities. This speed bump thing is too much of an easy cop put for the authorities. What is the Department of Transport and Traffic doing? Miguel Fevrier has mentioned Road Safety campaign and so did King. Where is it??

  6. No need for a speed bump there… There are already 2 speed bumps closer to the gas station side. The problem is that there are 2 bars on either side of the road. People are drunk and crossing. Patrons are double parking on either side of the road which is illegal.. this is a highway… The road normally has two lanes for traffic but when release stress bar has an event, it basically turns to one lane… This is a highway and drivers need to slow down to ensure that someone doesn’t pull out when they’re driving or having to ensure someone doesn’t get hit. The authorities need to look into the matter and avoid the doubles parking or try to remove the newer bar on the other side of the road… Or the owners can backfill the area to the left of the newer bar and create adequate parking for patrons so that their vehicle is not affecting oncoming traffic.

  7. 41-year-old Kenny Florent, alias ‘Mad’ on the Laborie Highway near Relief Stress Bar … This spells it out, unless someone can say this gentleman is not a consumer of alcohol, it takes just a split second for bad things to happen and this is an unfortunate situation. Bars need to be held accountable for selling alcohol to intoxicated individuals, it’s not just about the money it’s about the person life. In st. Lucia life don’t matter so what the hell. God for bid and damage all alcohol content holder regardless of what it is in even down to the factory .. just destroy it and make it impossible for it to be made locally or import, do whatever it takes, just to not make it not available for two years. I bet the third year st. Lucia population drop. But then if a man is telling you god is so powerful and that god seeing you doing wrong and refused to stop or assist you. Do you really believe God is so powerful. Pick sense from nonsense

  8. There should only be one bar in that location and parking on one side of the road. The original bar locations needs to be closed and parking deterrents placed on that side. Department of planning and the authorities need to get involved. A tourist does not need to die first. NO SPEED BUMPS!

  9. Obédience is blessings ❗
    Far from harm !
    Simply Obey !
His eyes are too powerful to see 😈 evil,if God does not put his trust in his Holy ones, when they do wrong,to condemn them 🔥,much less a sinner
The words of my mouth are just ;none of them is crooked or perverse..
I (God)open my lips to speak what is right,my mouth speaks what is true..
Those who are far from you will perish ; you destroy all the sinners all those who are unfaithful to you..
It is good to be near God ❗

  10. The comments here are wild and people sound uneducated it’s mind boggling.. so I guess drinking means you shouldn’t cross the road? I guess the fact that every driver knows the conditions of the road in that area should continue to drive with speed and without precaution. Had this driver slowed down knowing the hazards, perhaps his life would not have been lost. There is no one else to blame except the party who caused a perhaps avoidable death by slowing down which St Lucians refuse to do despite. And most people drink and drive too.. IS THAt the only locations with vehicles parked on the side of the road? It’s not illegal to do.. however in addition to all the measures which could be in place the biggest one is for drivers to drive according to the road conditions. People have to cross the road and people have to park vehicles. Disgusting to blame the actual victim
    What the actual hell.

  11. Don’t be harsh my people, Satan 🐍 the devil is acting activly in whom he finds favor because he knows his time is short ,and has been condemn with him all those who die without God or the word of God or JESUS in this ‘ungodly world ‘…
